Coodanup College welcomed elders Elsie Ugle and Barbara Pickett to speak for their NAIDOC celebrations complementing this year’s theme, ‘Because of her we can.’
The day started with students learning about successful and influential indigenous females.
Students also got the opportunity to write a letter to an important female in their life using Noongar language.
The next part of the day consisted of an assembly where Ms Ugle and Ms Pickett shared their stories of childhood and growing up.
The Girls Academy performed a cleansing dance and two boys from the Clontarf Academy shared with the audience why their mothers were so special to them.
During the assembly, a number of our indigenous students were recognised for their achievements in leadership, good spirit, academia and sport.
The Aboriginal education committee presented students with certificates and prizes.
The assembly concluded with a performance from the Kongal Marawar Ngoons dance group who taught students dance routines in the weeks prior.
Deputy principal Kelly Bennett said the performance was exceptional and the day went well.
“The boys did an amazing job and got the whole audience involved,” she said.
“After the assembly, students were treated to lunch and one of our amazing community members made a delicious kangaroo stew for our parents and guest.
“The year 7 cooking class also prepared damper for everyone to enjoy.”
Ms Bennett said the day ended with students enjoying various indigenous activites including sand art, didgeridoo making, dream stones and art scratch boards.
