What happened in January
SWIMMING: Swimmer Sophie Vergone returned from the Western Australian Sunsmart State Swimming Championship with nine medals, including three gold, draped around her neck.
FOOTBALL: A shock decision by sport’s court of arbitration to suspend all current and former players involved in Essendon’s supplements saga ruled Peel Thunder star Leroy Jetta out for season 2016.
BOXING: Mandurah boxing star Alex Winwood was working towards a trip to the Philippines as part of his preparation for an Olympic qualifying tournament.
FOOTBALL: The Peel Thunderbirds hit the training track for the start of their pre-season regime.
SURFING: Family and friends of local surfers Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas paid tribute to their loved ones with an emotional paddle-out off Golden Bay.
CRICKET: The Peel Cricket Association defeated the Upper Great Southern Cricket Association to win the A-grade Country Week title.`
SURFING: Mandurah surfer April McPherson took out a win in the 16 and under division of the 2016 Taj’s Small Fries competition down south.
