Mandurah's youth contemporary performance company Riptide are preparing to welcome new members from around the Peel region in preparation for semester two.
As the first half of 2019 draws to a close, Riptide will host an open day workshop on Saturday, June 8 from 10am-1pm at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre for 15-25 year olds.
The company aims to empower youth from around the Peel region, give them control over their own creativity to make theatre, encourage growth by teaching new skills and create an environment in which members can learn from each other.
Trainee artistic director Ruby Liddelow said it was an incredible opportunity for locals interested in the arts.
"Open workshops are really important to us as it allows us to meet young people and for them to decide if they'd like to be in Riptide," she said.
"Rather than an intimidating audition, we want to make young people feel welcome.
"There's very little required to join up, you just need to be 15-25, living in Peel and be able to commit the time.
"Young people grow through the program."
Well known for their high quality contemporary performances which challenge and celebrate the local community, Riptide have enjoyed a successful and busy first semester.
They completed a masterclass series with professional Perth artists, performed at Crab Fest, remounted old productions and gave a sneak-peek into their new project Tide Tales.
Four members of the Riptide cast also wrote new plays under the guidance of Jane Fitzgerald, sponsored by Country Arts WA YCulture Drug Aware. They then flew to Sydney to develop them, thanks to funding from the Lesley Couzens Art Fellowship.
Next semester, Riptide members will have the chance to take part in the major 2019 production as well as help develop their summer show.
