November was an incredibly busy month for the Chamber and the business community.
With the success of the 2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services, the 2018 Future Proof Peel Business Conference attended by over 200 business representatives, a business showcase event in Waroona, and the Regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry WA Parliamentary conference - the weather isn’t the only thing heating up!
Outside of these projects and business events, the Chamber has been focusing heavily on local and state advocacy ventures to address the ever-changing needs of the business community.
One venture has been the continuation of the state government lobbying efforts for reform in addressing the payroll tax burden for our medium-sized businesses.

With this specific tax making up are large portion of the state government’s revenue, this battle has traditionally been one of a David and Goliath match in nature, however with recent successes at the federal level with regards to WA’s abysmal GST share, real progress is on the horizon.
Other key advocacy focus areas have included the need to address the unfair regulatory playing field brought on by new services entering our markets.
The services at the forefront of these discussions are Uber and Airbnb.
The class action suit against Uber launched by law firm Maurice Blackburn on behalf of the Victorian Taxi Industry was extended to include New South Wales, Queensland and WA.
To assist in these efforts, the Peel Chamber has continued to lobby the Minister for Transport urging the state government to consider major reform to the regulatory landscape of this industry.
Similar efforts have been actioned in the accommodation space currently being unhinged due to the introduction of Airbnb.
Due to safety concerns raised through the current lack of regulation, the state government has launched an inquiry into Airbnb.
From a consumer’s point of view, Airbnb may appear to a be good option, however after considerable research, consultation and economic impact studies, the facts around the perceived benefits just don’t add up.
Finally, we would like to remind everyones of the importance of supporting our local small business retail sector and shopping locally this Christmas.
They are the people who sponsor sporting clubs, employ our youth and contribute to our community groups - show your thanks and support those who support all of us by sourcing that perfect gift locally.
