Coodanup boasts biggest improvement in household recycling behaviour

An audit undertaken by the local government’s recycling education officer since January 2014 has revealed the number of contaminated recycling bins in each suburb. 

As of March 2018, the audit program has recorded 78,832 bins in several Mandurah suburbs.

The statistics were released after the City of Mandurah’s mayor Rhys Williams announced a new campaign targeted at tackling waste contamination rates within the local government jurisdiction.

Results over the four-year study show a whopping decrease in contamination rates across the city. 

In 2014, the percentage of contaminated bins sat at about 10 per cent.

Since that time contamination rates have dropped at an average two per cent a year. 

Residents across Mandurah that were included in the study can now boast a significantly improved rate that sits at two per cent.

In 2014, Mandurah’s eastern suburb Coodanup tabled the worst results of the audit.

The suburb had a contamination rate of 18 per cent. 

In a short four years, residents turned the tables and can now boast a rate of less than one per cent. 

In 2015 and 2016, Coodanup tallied a rate of five per cent and three per cent in 2017. 

In the first year of the audit, Dawesville produced an average contamination rate across the city at just 10 per cent. 

In 2015, the southern suburb halved that result then continued to improve, with a contamination rate of just two per cent during 2016 and 2017. 

But that’s where the improvements stopped. In 2018, the contamination rates were recorded to be on track for a two per cent increased. 

There’s still time for residents to clean up their act though because the results for 2018 were only recorded until March. 

Middle of the range back in 2014 – Erskine recorded an eight per cent recycling bin contamination. 

From 2015 and 2017, the suburb dipped in between five and four per cent before finally settling on an improved three percent at the start of 2018.  

Falcon was another big achiever in its improvement. 

The southern suburb turned a 15 per cent rate into a two per cent rate over the period of the study. 

Now boasting an impressive three per cent contamination rate, Greenfields has come a long way since recording an 11 per cent rate in 2014. 

In 2015 and 2016, the suburb recorded a five per cent rate and in 2017 it boasted a low two per cent rate.

Dudley Park was another high tallier in 2014. In the first year, the audit revealed the central suburb held a rate of 16 per cent. 

The following year the suburb dropped that whopping result to just four per cent. 

In 2018, the suburb is on track to a significantly improved two per cent. 

Since recording a nine per cent contamination rate in 2014, Halls Head residents have cleaned up their act and produced significantly improved results. 

From 2015 to 2018 the suburb has dipped between a three to four per cent rate.  

Madora Bay had the best results of all of the suburbs. 

In 2014 and 2018, the northern suburb recorded a contamination rate of less than one per cent. 

Between that time, rates did increase but only slightly and at most up to four per cent. 

People living in the central area of the city improved their contamination rates from nine per cent in 2014 to one per cent in 2018. 

The climb saw the suburb record a six per cent rate in 2015, before moving to a decreased four per cent in 2016 and 2017. 

Meadow Springs started high with a 13 per cent contamination rate in 2014 but swiftly changed their ways for the better. 

At the start of 2018, the suburb recorded a rate of less than one per cent. 

In between that time, the suburb sat at either a five or six per cent rate. 

The beach-side suburb boasted lower than average contamination rates throughout the audit.

Silver Sands’ residents changed their six per cent rate in 2014 to a two per cent rate in 2018.  

Our most northern suburb, Lakelands, recorded a 10 per cent contamination rate in 2014. 

The following year that rate dropped slightly to a seven per cent rate. 

From there it was all smooth sailing with five per cent recorded in 2016 and 2017, followed by two per cent at the start of 2018. 

Lastly, Mandurah’s southern suburb of Wannanup recorded a five per cent rate of contamination in 2014. 

Then in 2017, the suburb’s rate jumped up to nine per cent before finally finishing up at less than one per cent.
