Expanding the Peel Health Hub and the activation of Yalgorup National Park are two of many items the City of Mandurah will be seeking federal government support for.
On Tuesday, councillors voted on what to advocate for ahead of the 2022 federal election.
The council's advocacy priorities will now undergo a full review at a strategic planning session in February. If approved, the City will seek federal government support for several projects.
Yalgorup National Park Activation
The Yalgorup National Park activation is likely to focus on heritage restoration of the Herron Homestead, upgrade of northern access roads, Lake Clifton Thrombolites, utilities investment to enable nature-based tourism and the development of tourism businesses.
Peel Health Hub Expansion
GP Down South and Allambee are seeking funding of $19.9 million to construct a health services building connected to the existing Peel Health Hub.
This is expected to provide integrated health services to an additional 3,000 clients. The proposal anticipates 55 jobs during construction and 52 new jobs once operating.
Madora Bay to Lakelands pedestrian bridge
The City is looking to upgrade and relocate an already purchased pedestrian bridge to provide a safe, accessible connection for the communities of Lakelands and Madora Bay.
Men's Shed developments
According to a city report, all three Men's Sheds have outgrown current facilities and there is a need to cater for membership and service growth as a priority.
Entrepreneurial Program expansion
Over the last give years, the pilot entrepreneurial program has had more than 950 participants and resulted in the creation of 80 full-time and 300 part-time jobs. The City is now looking to grow and expand this initiative.
Mandurah Regional Netball Centre
The Mandurah Netball Association has informed the City that it has outgrown the Thomson Street site and believes there is no opportunity to expand at the current site.
With projected participation growth, the City will push to provide for one of the most prominent sports for women and girls in the region.
Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club relocation
The City will advocate for the relocation of the Mandurah Surf Life Saving Club facility to accommodate the club's current and projected large increase in membership and increased broader community involvement.
Regional status recognition
A federal government decision to rezone Mandurah as metropolitan has made it near impossible for health service providers to retain doctors. The City will push for an exemption to attract more doctors to the region. The City also wants its regional status recognised as the majority of Mandurah is currently excluded from the Building Better Regions fund.
Waterways Research Centre
This project aims to explore the opportunities available in the area of water science to create new industry and economic diversity.
