Last week, the 2021 Mandurah Junior Councillors had a graduation event, celebrating the year and their achievements at a special event at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club on November 18.
The Mandurah Junior Council consists of 38 year six students from 19 primary schools across Mandurah, providing young councillors with a unique opportunity to learn about local government and voice their opinions on things that matter to them.
After a well-contested election process this year, Tamsyn Hill from Falcon Primary School was elected Junior Mayor, and Zoe Thompson from Frederick Irwin Anglican School was elected Deputy Junior Mayor.
The Junior Council experienced a number of opportunities throughout the year. Guest speakers at their meetings included Federal Canning MP Andrew Hastie and Mayor Rhys Williams to learn firsthand about the levels of government, and community champions Deb Maybury from Socks for Cooper, Lisa Kelly from Wally Fun with Lisa and Kirstin Field from Coastal Waste Warriors spoke about making a difference in the community.
The Junior Council's chosen project for the year was about Road Safety, with a poster competition and a presentation delivered to all schools in Mandurah.
The Mandurah Junior Council was first established in 1985 to enable young people to have a voice in their community and to learn about local government.
Since its inception, some of the format has changed but the original objective has remained the same; to empower young people within Mandurah and equip them with the skills to step up as leaders today and into the future.
