A free science camp for Mandurah teenagers will be held in the summer school holidays.
Nominations for participation in Trail Blazers is open until November 21.
Trail Blazers is a mentorship program designed to support young people who are considering a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).
The all-expenses-paid program is open to Peel residents aged 13-17 years of age.
Trail Blazers features a five-night residential summer camp taking place in the January school holidays. The camp consists of challenges, guest speakers, workshops and activities that are designed to teach important life skills and develop the participants capability, employability, and STEM knowledge.
The camp runs from January 17-22 in Fairbridge, Pinjarra and is led by Peel Bright Minds program director, Skipper van Peer with the support of eight mentors. The mentors are local young leaders who have pursed a career in a STEM field and are passionate about supporting those following in their footsteps.
This experience is something that I and the other mentors wish we had when we were in high school. We all believe that it is important that these types of learning opportunities are available to young people, especially in regional communities where they may not have access to the same opportunities as their urban peers Ms van Peer said.
An experience like Trail Blazers can be a launch pad for participants, it helps them to identify their strengths and interests. Plus, it gives participants the network, skills, tools and mindset to think aspirational and set themselves up for success in whatever direction they choose to pursue."
