Dear Mandurah Residents,
As you all know, recently (20/07/21), I publicly announced a "Symbolic Hunger Strike" for more Police in Mandurah in light with zero tolerance for crime, drugs, hooliganism, and antisocial behaviour.
I am very happy to see that a lot of people have responded to my appeal and showed their genuine interests to participate in the community hunger strike. However, I am a leader who not only listens to the community, but respects their voice as well. So, I am not going to take any risks. That is why I have decided not to proceed.
There are two reasons for this decision, one is the weather conditions and another is if I go ahead with the hunger strike, certain groups of people will shout out that this a "stunt", something for show, rather than what it really is. This is really just members of the community voicing their anger through actions.
My intention is not to create a "stunt" but I am rather seeking attention from the State Government and now that I have attention on the issue, my direction and vision for Mandurah is to create a peaceful environment for the development of prosperity and pursuit of happiness for all residents and visitors to Mandurah. This cannot be achieved in an environment where antisocial behaviour is tolerated.
As our local MP and Minister for Tourism David Templeman said, policing is a state issue and not council's jurisdiction. He also admitted that the State Government knows about the problem and is recruiting 1000 new police officers as an election promise and he would be requesting more police officers in Mandurah.
I respect our long-time local MP Hon. David Templeman and would like to see how quick he acts on the issue and make Mandurah a safe city for all.
Therefore, I would like to request that all Mandurah residents, please report all incidents to police, no matter how small the crime is. Here, everything works on statistics. If statistics show higher crime, then they will act and I will also have valid ground to work on that.
