At long last Mandurah's patched and bumpy main thoroughfare, Pinjarra Road, has started to be replaced.
A bane for many motorists, the road has been in disrepair for several years.
The stretch from Dower Street to the city centre will be upgraded.
It's a big project and the City of Mandurah says it will be staged over several years, as funding permits.
The City says much of the delay in repairing the road was due to Main Roads proposing to buy land on either side to widen the road. However, with no firm commitment from the state government as to whether this would actually proceed, the City finally decided to go ahead with the works.
"The City has embarked upon a $10 million dollar rejuvenation project..."
Mandurah's mayor Rhys Williams acknowledged the road was a major entry point to Mandurah and was an important part of Mandurah's road network and the business community, which was why its upgrade was so important.
"The City has embarked upon a $10 million dollar rejuvenation project...designed to address its deterioration and return the condition of the pavement to an acceptable standard for a city of our size," Mayor Williams said.
The City has allocated $1.5m in the 2021-22 budget and a further $750,000 in the following year's budget, with two-thirds coming from the state government's Regional Roads Group. However it's seeking additional funding to expand the project along the length of Pinjarra Road to eventually tie into Sholl Street.
The current works will include road reconstruction, resealing and stormwater drainage upgrades.
The Pinjarra/Anstruther Road traffic light intersection would also be reviewed due to the number of crashes that occur there.
"The City of Mandurah acknowledges the disruption to the community, especially our local businesses, and we continue to work with them to minimise any impact as works are delivered."
