About 500 people have so far signed a petition for the markets to continue to operate fortnightly from the eastern foreshore next season - rather than monthly as proposed by the City - and to start selling food and drinks again, not just pantry items.
The City wants the markets to run just monthly as part of a markets trail idea that has been flagged.
Mayor Rhys Williams told the Mail the purpose of markets was to activate spaces and the eastern foreshore was already "activated" so additional sites were being considered.
He said having the markets every second Sunday meant other events were limited on the site.
The Mandjar Markets have been running on the eastern foreshore for 13 years.
