May Tam, a joey scout at Falcon Scouts, loves to help people.
The 7-year-old budding philanthropist spends time planning out ways to fundraise for important issues, including Type 1 diabetes, from which she suffers.
May's mum Cindy Tam, a group leader at Falcon Scouts, said that when cyclone Seroja hit, May was deeply concerned about the animals and people she had met when the family holidayed in Kalbarri a few years ago.
"May always wants to help people," Ms Tam said.
"A few years ago when we were in Kalbarri we met some wonderful people and animals at Tudor Caravan Park and Big River Ranch. When May heard about the cyclone she was moved to find a way to help her favourite holiday town."
So May decided to collect recyclables or "cans for Kalbarri" which she would exchange for money and then donate the proceeds to help the town rebuild.
"May told me she wanted to raise money in a way that didn't require people to directly donate," Ms Tam said.
"She said she knew COVID meant that a lot of people don't have money to spare right now - but they do have cans and bottles. So we have been collecting and donating - we should have about $80 worth to drop in tomorrow, and we are donating it to the Lord Mayor's fund."
In the midst of fundraising and finding initiatives to support, May will celebrate her eighth birthday next week.
"We're pretty proud of May. She's always finding ways to help people - and she will continue to do just that," Ms Tam said.
