The 2020 Christmas pageant has been officially cancelled, with the City of Mandurah council making the tough call to abandon proceedings.
The disappointing news comes following the extension of Phase 4 restrictions beyond the October 24 end date.
The new Mandurah Street Party, originally set to be held on November 7, has also been postponed until Phase 5 is announced.
According to City of Mandurah staff, it was not possible to follow COVID-19 safety guidelines at events of this size.
This announcement comes as a devastating blow for the Mandurah community, which has already seen the cancellation of large-scale events such as the Crab Fest and Waroona Show due to the pandemic.
While upset these events can't go ahead, Mandurah mayor Rhys Williams said local families can still make the most of the festive season.
"Although we have to try something different for our events in 2020, we haven't lost focus on Mandurah becoming the 'Capital of Christmas' and making the most of the festive season," he said.
"Even though things may not be the norm this year, there are still plenty of ways that people can celebrate and enjoy this special time of year.
"I'd encourage everyone to get out with their family and friends to enjoy a bigger and better christmas lights trail, take part in the iconic christmas lights canal cruises, and support local businesses.
"We're also planning other mid-week and weekend activations to extend the festive fun - we can't wait to bring back the pageant next year."

City staff have recommended the money that was going to be spent on the Christmas pageant be reallocated to "smaller activations".
In a welcome turn of events, New Year's Eve fireworks celebrations will still be held but will adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.
The fate of the 2021 Crab Fest will likely be decided at the council's December meeting.
