Secret Harbour fell short of claiming a win in their A-grade debut as an efficient half century from Jake Wyllie led Halls Head to victory in their Peel Cricket Association season opener at Peelwood Reserve on Saturday.
The opening batsman was on fire for his 115 minutes at the crease, carving out 64 runs from 89 deliveries to put Halls Head in a powerful position early in the game.
His efforts helped the home side recover from the early loss of fellow opener Josh Rudge, who was sent packing for eight runs when a catch from Isaac Cheyne gave the competition's newcomers early reason to celebrate.
The hosts looked in trouble at 1/10, but some rapid runs from Wyllie and English import Jack Manuel helped rectify the situation.
Manuel blasted out 40 from just 36 deliveries as the pair combined for a 57-run stand before he was clean bowled by Ganesh Chaudhari.
Wyllie was then supported by a further 24 from Michael Chappell and 30 from Chris Phelps, as an encouraging top order performance gave Halls Head enough runs to comfortably cover a collapse from the tail.
In the end Halls Head posted 202 before being dismissed with four balls remaining in the innings.
Chaudhari led the wicket taking for Secret Harbour with 3/32.
The Dockers' run chase was off to a horror start when openers Chris O'Donnell (0) and Zac Jarrett (1) combined for just a single run.
The pair fell victim to deliveries from Alex Quigg and Lochie Kinna, leaving their side reeling at 2/16.
Fortunately Ashley North was able to do for Secret Harbour what Wyllie did for Halls Head, as he bashed out 72 runs alongside 36 from Yagan Walley and 29 from Kody Smith.
Together the trio saw Secret Harbour back into a competitive position, but an even spread of wickets among the Halls Head bowlers proved too much.
Eventually the Dockers were ousted for 180 with three overs spare.
Halls Head was the only club to score more than 200 runs on opening weekend, but still remains outside the top four residing in fifth spot on the back of their season-opening win.
