The Peel Lightning will be looking to make their mark on the Western Australian Netball League (WANL) next season, with Mandurah's new state-level club officially launching their brand name and logo on Friday.
The club, running as an affiliate to the Peel Football and Netball League, were awarded the eighth licence to compete in the WANL from 2020-2021 by Netball WA in May.
The Lightning will join current clubs the Curtin Hamersley Comets, East Freo Sharks, Rangers, Southside Demons, ECU Souwest Jets, Western Roar and West Coast Warriors in the competition.
They will enter sides in the women's league and under 20 divisions from next year, and are currently working through a number of corporate partnership opportunities with businesses in the Peel area.
Newly-appointed president Deb Clancy will spearhead the club's introduction to the competition, alongside vice president Darren Dews.
Clancy said the establishment of the new state-level club would be a huge boost for netball in the Peel region.
"This will be the biggest launch of a sporting club in the Peel area since the introduction of a WAFL club many years ago," she said.
"The Peel region already has many elite athletes playing in the Peel Football and Netball League and surrounding associations, as well as several athletes currently playing in the WANL, and now we can entice players to stay in the Peel region."
"The talent pathway we will create will be massive for both junior and senior levels, and will allow players to strive to play netball at the elite level."
Netball WA chief executive officer Simon Taylor welcomed the Lightning to the competition.
"We have seen a wonderful level of competition already in 2019, and I am confident that the Lightning will only add to the spectacle when they enter the league next year," he said.
"The team at the Lightning have already done a fantastic amount of work, so on behalf of Netball WA I congratulate everyone involved in getting the club to where it is now."
