McPherson shines on way to back-to-back state surfing titles

Falcon based surfing star April McPherson enjoyed a stellar weekend on the waves as she claimed a second straight WA Surf Masters Title just south of Geraldton on Saturday.

The young gun carved up on her way to back-to-back titles in the open women's division, edging out the likes of Sophie Butcher (Dongara), Mylee Grant (Geraldton) and Lyla Macpherson (Wembly Downs).

In what was a huge win in front of the state's most experienced surfers, McPherson made her presence felt at the event.

Using her lethal backhand and great wave selection, McPherson claimed another open women's state title with a blistering display.

Following the win, the rising star said she was thrilled to be crowned champ again.

"I love coming up and surfing against the girls, this wave really suits my surfing," she said.

"I'm stoked to be crowned the open women's state champion again."

The victory comes almost exactly one year after McPherson claimed her first ever WA championship, earning her praise from Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks.

"I'd like to congratulate April McPherson and Pascal Hutchinson (men's winner) for claiming the open state championship titles for 2019 and booking their place into the Trials Event of the 2020 Margaret River Pro," Majeks said.

"Congratulations to all our winners and I wish our WA State Team representatives the best of luck at the upcoming National Titles."

McPherson wasn't the only Peel region local to taste some success at the event, however, with Brian Williams (Falcon) and Guy Bennett (Secret Harbour) both finishing in the over 50s legends top four.

All attentions now shift to preparing the nine State Champions and the WA Surf Masters Team for the upcoming Australian Surf Championships in New South Wales in August.
