AUSTRALIA'S LOSSES
The July 1916 Battle of Fromelles in France was the first major engagement by Australian troops on the Western Front during World War I.
Australia suffered total casualties of 5533, including 1917 dead and 470 taken prisoner.
It remains the worst 24 hours of Australian military history.
THE FROMELLES PROJECT
The remains of 250 soldiers were recovered from mass graves near Pheasant Wood in 2009.
In 2010 the bodies were reinterred with full military honours in graves in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Cemetery.
Now identified: 166 Australian soldiers
Not yet identified: 84 soldiers
HOW THE PROJECT WORKS
The Fromelles Project data analysis team examines forensic and artefact evidence, historical information, anthropological data and DNA testing to determine soldiers' identities.
The Fromelles Identification Board meets each year to consider the evidence and make a decision.
More than 3000 people are registered on the Australian Fromelles relatives database and almost 1000 have provided DNA samples for analysis.
Project involves: Defence, other agencies, contracted specialists, volunteer researchers.
Families: Register with the Australian Army's unrecovered war casualties unit if relatives fought at Fromelles, died on 19 or 20 July, 1916, but have no known grave.
