A trio of Mandurah-based surfers opened their campaigns at the WA Longboard Titles in style when they took to large and powerful 4-6m waves at Yallingup Main Break for round one of the series over the weekend.
Broken boards and snapped leashes highlighted the fearsome surf conditions, but they didn't stop Zali Corry, Brendan Collins and Ryan Egan from starting their state titles series on the right foot.
Corry impressed mightily, being named the event's rising star after winning the under 18 girls and finishing fourth in the open women's category.
The young gun showed she can tame the wild conditions and took home a new Volte wetsuit for her efforts.
Meanwhile Collins is off to a strong start in the over 40 men's longboard division, powering his way to second place to finish runner-up behind Gabbadah's Scott Trew in a close call.
His hot form continued in the over 45s, as he carved his way to third place.
Egan rounded out the positive results for Mandurah's competitors, claiming second place on the over 40 men's logger table.
Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said the event continued a proud tradition of longboard surfing in Western Australia.
“Longboarding is such an important part of surfing’s history and it was so good to see how well everyone competed alongside one another no matter of their age or gender,” he said.
“I’m delighted with the outcome of the event and I’m really happy to see the successful introduction of new competition format, as well as the levels of stoke and encouragement on offer for the past three days.”
All eyes now turn towards the second event of the series, which will head to the beautiful beaches of Denmark in May.
