Peel Cricket Association product Eric Botha wasted little time making his mark at the Cricket Australia Under 19s National Championships, collecting a hat-trick for WA in their first game against South Australia on Monday.
The Baldivis junior turned Rockingham-Mandurah player rampaged through the southerners’ tail end when he collected the wickets of Josh Pengelley, Hanno Jacobs and Cameron Fatchen on consecutive balls.
They were the final three scalps in a five-wicket haul for the local star, as he put on a stellar performance in the 50-over clash to end the innings with 5/48 as the West’s leading bowler.
Fellow Peel product and Halls Head junior Damien Burrage – who is captaining the state side throughout the carnival – was the only other WA bowler to snag consecutive wickets finishing with 2/40 on the day.
But outside of Botha’s impressive figures it’s been tough sledding for WA in their opener, with the South Aussies well and truly on top thanks to huge centuries from Bailey Capel and Henry Dall.
Opening the batting Capel blasted his way to 138 from just 129 deliveries, finding the boundary 19 times (including six maximums), while Dall wasn’t far behind his pace posting 109 off 132 balls.
The pair compiled a stunning 223-run partnership after Capel’s fellow opener, Lewis Evans, was caught out for a golden duck.
Together they helped South Australia to 9/300 from 50 overs, before red-headed bowling sensation Lloyd Pope destroyed the WA batting line-up.
The phenomenal leg spinner ended his day with the figures of 6/31, starring in a bowling attack that sent Western Australia packing with just 122 runs to their name.
South Australia continues their campaign with a match against the ACT/NSW Country combined side tomorrow, while WA looks to bounce back against a Tasmanian side that took down the Cricket Australia XI in the opening round.
