Bryce Evans tallied the highest individual score of the Peel Cricket Association’s 2018/19 season to lead Singleton past South Mandurah in dominant fashion for their round eight clash on Saturday.
The Irwinians captain put on a clinic notching the season’s first century, blasting out 21 boundaries (eight for six) on his way to 134 runs to buoy his side to a massive total and their fourth win on the year.
Opting to bat first Singleton received solid contributions from openers Tim Hutchison (25) and Danny Woollard (39) who provided a 45-run stand before the former was caught by Souths’ Jesse Buck.
But Hutchison’s dismissal paved the way for Evans to take to the crease, with the skipper going on to wreak havoc against the Falcons’ attack.
His enormous contribution sparked partnerships of 78 and 64 with Woollard and Mitchell Shellam respectively, lifting the Irwinians to 255 runs before he was gone leg-before-wicket from a Scott Atkin delivery.
Atkin’s lone wicket for the day looked to be a crucial one, but the loss of Evans still failed to slow Singleton as Brendan Gillian (40) and Andrew Peckover (33) both went unbeaten to give the home side a final push towards their 5/308 score.
The Falcons required a run-rate of a shade above six per over, but their efforts were stunted by some restrictive bowling from Hutchison and Jay Boyd.
Hutchison claimed a stellar 3/11 from his eight overs, including ousting South Mandurah’s finest batsmen Jack Sears, who piled up 67 runs in a defiant effort.
Meanwhile Boyd’s 3/9 from 5.4 overs was the cherry on top, with the Falcons all out on 157 runs.
Singleton remains in fifth on the ladder, just behind Pinjarra in fourth.
Mandurah def. Pinjarra
A patient Mandurah kept their undefeated record in tact when they slowly but surely fended off a spirited Pinjarra on Saturday.
The Tigers looked in trouble after being sent in to bat, with Joseph Slade’s 20 their highest individual knock as the league leaders cleaned them up on 102 runs.
But what should have been a simple chase for Mandurah became a close call as Matt France (3/15) kept them honest until they were able to surpass the total in the 47th over with Matt Jenkinson’s 30 the game’s best knock.
Mandurah remain atop the table with a perfect 8-0 record.
White Knights Baldivis def. Shoalwater Bay
Baldivis strengthened their top four claim with Wesley Steele and Stefan Botha spurring them to a victory over the Seals in round eight.
Steele pieced together 70 runs, pairing with Dan Gray (56) for an opening stand of 122 followed up by Greg Roos’ 64 from just 43 deliveries to give the Knights 5/281 from their allotted overs.
Botha then took control with the ball, collecting 4/14 from seven overs (four maidens) to help rattle the Seals’ order despite a solid effort from Shane Schnaars who went for 66 runs.
Ousted on 180, the Seals went home with a loss while Baldivis moved to a 7-1 record through eight games.
Warnbro def. Hillman
Jake Cassidy’s insane bowling spell helped Warnbro snare an unlikely win defending just 105 runs against Hillman on Saturday.
The Hornets looked in control after Warnbro opted to bat first, with Troy Lovegrove bagging a massive seven-wicket haul to keep the Swans to the low total.
But Cassidy returned the favour, collecting 5/9 from 5.4 overs to help send Hillman packing on just 75 runs in their chase.
The victory is Warnbro’s second and lifts them above South Mandurah on the ladder, while Hillman remain in the bottom spot.
Waroona def. Halls Head
The reigning champs bounced back from their horror loss last week with Ben Wright and Zac Moody shining in a victory over Halls Head.
Batting first, the Warriors leaned on Wright for the bulk of their scoring as he piled up 67 runs, while Moody chipped in 58 of his own to help them to a 9/198 score.
Moody then kept his form rolling with the ball, as he conjured 4/27 from his nine overs to keep Halls Head’s chase under control.
Levi Muller notched a half century, but his side was outsted on 150 for a loss.
