Scientific tests have confirmed the species of shark that attack 20-year-old surfer Noah Symmans was a grey nurse.
Scientists tested a tooth fragment taken from one of the wounds received by Symmans at Pyramids Beach in Dawesville on Sunday, November 10.
The DNA identification used to assess the fragment revealed the species was a grey nurse shark (Carcharias Taurus).
Due to their generally docile nature, grey nurse sharks are not a target species for shark mitigation programs in Australia.

Symmans was bodyboarding at a break off Pyramids Beach around 8.50am last weekend when he was bitten on the calf.
He was able to free himself before getting help from surf lifesavers and St John Ambulance officers.
