Pinjarra is set to have a new community function centre by early next year after a not-for-profit organisation was successful in applying for a Lotterywest grant.
Murray-Wellington MP Robyn Clarke presented the Pinjarra Community Garden with a $90,000 cheque on Tuesday, which will be used to construct new facilities.
Based on Pinjarra-Williams Road, the community garden has gone from strength-to-strength over recent months, according to chairman Peter Luck.
“As people can see things growing and the facilities starting to come on board, more and more people are getting involved,” he said.
“It is open Fridays and Saturdays currently – hopefully it will be open seven days a week once we get the facilities in place.
“We are building a function centre, a disabled toilet, two ambulant toilets, a library, office, a commercial kitchen and a function room.
“It is going to be a very usable space - not just for the community garden but the whole community.”
Mr Luck said he hoped the work would be completed in early 2019 and thanked Ms Clarke and the Shire of Murray for their support.
Ms Clarke said the Pinjarra Community Garden was a worthy cause.
“I’ve watched over the last two years as this community garden has gone from strength to strength – it is absolutely fantastic what Peter and his team do down here,” she said.
“It is all volunteers – people taking time out of their own lives to run this for the community and it is open to everyone.
“I would like to see this whole precinct become a real community hub, including a mens shed close by to bring the community into this part of Pinjarra.”
Shire of Murray chief executive Dean Unsworth said a collaborative approach was helping Pinjarra progress.
“This shows that it is a really healthy, coordinated community – everyone is working together,” he said.
“Pinjarra is growing but you have got the community that want to keep it what it is – and that’s a country town.
“We want to make sure it is a strong community – which it is. These things are just another piece of the puzzle.
“We have got a great community and so many volunteers that continue to give their time. I just think we are creating an amazing Pinjarra.”
