Where do you see Mandurah in 20 years? That’s the question City of Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams is asking the community.
Mr Williams put forward a motion at Tuesday’s meeting which outlined a plan to create a clear, citizen-led vision for Mandurah’s future.
“In simple terms I hope that this motion will allow our community to come forward and shape the story of their city for the next 20 years,” Mr Williams said.
“There are 87,000 people in this city, all who have chosen to call this place home.
“Our best chance at developing a compelling vision for the future is in working in close collaboration with those residents.”

Mr Williams said while all levels of government – including council – were in the “business of facilitating the vision to come to fruition” it was important that the community had extensive opportunity to be involved in creating the vision.
“We will be doing our job properly if we provide the opportunity for all different people, from all different walks of life to input into this,” he said.
“And that's why it will be for everything from conversations in people's lounge rooms right through to a thousand people at a summit.”
The approved motion will see council form the framework for a city-wide community engagement campaign, a Future of Mandurah summit, and eventually the review of the City of Mandurah Strategic Community Plan.
“We are ready as a local government to fully embrace a citizen-led philosophy,” Mr Williams said.
“Since becoming Mayor I have tried to take every opportunity on a personal level listen to you.
“I have also encouraged my fellow councillors and the staff of the City to do the same. It is important to note, however, that just because we are entering into a conversation with you about our brand, our story, our future – we are not forgetting to get on with the job of making Mandurah a better place to live now.”
Mr Williams encouraged the community to follow the progress of the initiative through the local media, and the City of Mandurah’s website – mandurah.wa.gov.au – and social media channels.
