Peel Aquatic Club youngster Ava Latter will jet off bound for Tasmania on Tuesday, as she prepares to represent Western Australia at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships over the next week.
The Pinjarra Senior High School student will don her goggles and cap for her state in the 50, 100 and 200-metre breaststroke swims, and will act as a back up reserve for the 50m butterfly and 200m individual medley.
She sets off as the only Peel region swimmer to be chosen for the carnival, with Peel Aquatic Club head coach Patrick Stellino applauding the 13-year-old for her dedication to the sport.
“It’s a really special achievement for Ava – she works so hard and never misses a training session,” he said.
“She’ll probably tell you she’s not the most naturally gifted swimmer, but because of the hard work she’s put in she’s now representing the state which is a big thing.
“Ava’s someone people love to have around our club. She’s really well-liked, always on time and does everything you ask for her.
“It’s definitely a proud time for our club, we’re really happy she’s made the team.”
Competition for the carnival kicks off this Thursday, with Ava spending a week in Hobart with the WA team before returning home next Tuesday, July 31.
