A trio of Mandurah bodyboarders took out podium finishes in wet and windy conditions at the SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles along the Peel coastline this weekend.
Kael McGowan, Andrus Joyce and Cael Joyce all enjoyed the home advantage at Fourth Groyne in Silver Sands, with all three taking out places in their respective divisions.
McGowan put in an admirable effort to finish as a runner-up in the under 16 cadet boys state championship, while Andrus and Cael finished second and third respectively in the under 14 grommet boys.
Eight-year-old Cael was awarded the Air Asia Wave of the Day in his first ever attempt at a state title competition, for his commitment in the testing conditions.
The break provided protection from the elements and threw up some fun and highly contestable left-hand wedges in the two metre range.
Five state champions were crowned at the event, with Ben Veitch taking out the open men’s category while Trigg’s Joel Hughan picked up a double-header with wins in the under 21 pro junior and under 18 junior men’s divisions.
Patrick Franklyn finished as a state champion in the under 16 boys while Ziggy Bullock took out the under 14s title ahead of the Joyce boys.
“After two great events in Margaret River and Mandurah, we congratulate our 2018 state champions and wish our WA Bodyboard Team all the best for the national titles in Tweed Heads,” Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks said.
“After some great individual and team results in the past, I’m sure WA bodyboarders will perform strongly once again on the national stage.”
