Centrals fended off a valiant effort from Waroona to post their second straight victory with a seven point win over the Demons on Sunday.
Last year’s grand finalists came storming back with four last quarter goals threatening to take their first win of the new campaign, but Centrals stood firm to grind out a gutsy 14.9 (93) to 14.16 (100) win.
Four goals from Grant Dunn and a prolific performance from Jacob Martinez were the key instigators for the Mundijong-based club’s second win on the season.
Centrals jumped out to a small lead at quarter time on the back of a four-goal first quarter that saw Ryan Henley, Daniel Wilson, Paul Mugamba and Dunn all register majors.
A further two from Dunn in the second term helped them stretch their advantage to 11 points at the long break, which became a 16-point margin at the final change.
But Waroona continued to fight hard in the final quarter, putting four goals through the sticks to drag themselves back into contention.
James Vincent’s five goals helped the Demons stay close throughout the game, while Justin Giumelli was crucial for the hosts.
But it wasn’t to be for the Demons, who eventually fell seven points short of collecting their first premiership points for the year.
The win moves Centrals to a 2-2 record after four games, good enough to equal them with Pinjarra, South Mandurah and Halls Head.
However, the Blues reside in sixth on the ladder, with the lowest percentage of the bunch.
Waroona remains the only winless team through four rounds but is threatening to break that drought with significantly improved performances each week.
The Demons have been steadily building since their thumping at the hands of the Mustangs in round one, and will look to snap out of their funk when they take on South Mandurah in round five.
Last time the two sides met was in an elimination final, with the Demons upsetting the Falcons at home.
