The Zonta Club of Peel volunteers supported women and encouraged them to achieve their full potential, president Lorraine Web said after she recieved the award on behalf of the club.
“Our mission is to empower women,” she said
“We do that through service, advocacy and education.”
Ms Webb said the group had been working on a number of projects, most notably their Migrant Women Project.
She said the group saw a need in the community that had to be filled.
“We saw that migrant women didn’t know how to communicate well or what to do in our community – so we approached them and asked if we could help,” Ms Webb said.
“Every week we have a drop-in centre where they can pop by and we can have conversations about different subjects and things that we can help them with.”
In addition to the the free tutoring, the group have awarded 11 scholarships for migrants to study English at TAFE.
“Then they can go out into the community and get a job,” Ms Webb said.
“We have been doing it with the Peel Multicultural Group for three-years and we are locked in for another three.”
The women also fundraise for a number of other causes including the local women’s refuge and to stop domestic violence.
Ms Webb said she would like the younger generation to follow in the the group’s footsteps.
“We want young girls to have opportunities,” Ms Webb said.
“We have approached a local school and asked them to set up a mini Zonta Club.
“This will help women learn how to conduct a meeting, stand up in roles and to fundraise for things themselves.”
