A trio of Peel region golf courses have been recognised as some of the best in the country after being selected to the premier category of the Great Golf Courses of Australia (GGA), an international marketing partnership between the industry and Tourism Australia.
The Cut, Meadow Springs and Secret Harbour Golf Links are the first West Australian courses to be honoured with premium status, after the Mandurah and Peel Tourism Organisation (MAPTO) hosted GGA’s Elizabeth Sattler in July.
The three met the specific criteria of the GGA’s selection process, and will now be featured as part of the initiative’s campaign to promote the country’s golf courses to the world.
“The Cut, Meadow Springs and Secret Harbour Golf Links share the attributes of the top courses in Australia,” Sattler said.
“Each offers the international golfer unique experiences and are superbly designed, challenging courses set in spectacular locations – all pre-requisites of the initiative.”
MAPTO chief executive office Karen Priest said it was a huge announcement for tourism in the Peel region.
“No West Australian course has ever been featured on the Great Golf Courses of Australia, so for our region to have the first three is something very special,” she said.
“Each of these courses will now gain extra exposure on a national level, so it’s a very exciting time.
“The proximity of South East Asia presents a great opportunity to increase golf holidays to the region.
“We will market our world class courses to consumers who have an increasing capacity and desire for leisure travel.”
The selection comes on the back of a bumper 12 months for golf in the Peel region, with a number of state and national competitions being held on local fairways.
The 2017 edition of the Steelscene Peel Pro-Am (held across three Peel region courses) was a strong follow-up to the 2016 installment that took out the prestigious Pro-Am of the Year award.
Mandurah-based PGA golfer Jarrod Mosley said it was a feather in the cap for the Peel region and the clubs to be not only the first Western Australian courses to be selected in the premier category but also the first in the country.
“As someone born and bred here, I am ecstatic that finally we’ve been recognised as one of Australia’s premium golfing destinations,” he said.
“These three courses have greatly prepared me for tournament play over the years and I am certain they will be etched into the memories of travelling golfers forever.”
