As the artist prepares for the launch, he reflected on his journey coming a long way from the 10-year-old boy winning a National Art Award, a Phantom Comic’s colouring-in competition, in the 1950s.
After a nine-to-five working life in an analytical thinking career, Blyth began to pursue a creative drive to experiment with different styles of art.
He applied his artistic skills in his jobs including drawings and covers for staff publications, illustrations, caricatures, cartoons, posters, photography for industry magazines and graphics for business advertisements.
In recent years, the artist has entered four Mandjar Art Awards, Mandjar 9x5 Art Auctions, six group exhibitions, designed and facilitated a marketing vehicle to showcase local artists and was one of two artists in the 2016 CASM Artists in Residence Program.
Blyth has also volunteered his time at CASM since 2012 and has continued to gain exposure to the art industry.
The CASM residency program allowed him to experiment with new materials and develop his style as well as providing a proactive space away from his usual environment and the everyday interruptions and distractions.
Blyth explored his life-long connection with nature, the forces of the elements and his fascination with tribal art and his use of symbolism during his 12-month residency.
“There are many reasons why artists paint. Mine is to create art that is personally fulfilling, however that is not enough in itself - my art must be fulfilling to those who view it, to the extent that they wish to acquire it and own it for their own pleasure,” he explained.
The exhibition will be officially opened at 6pm by iconic local artist Emma Blyth and there will be a free artist talk on Thursday, October 19 at 6pm.
Primal Connection will be open from October 13 until November 5 during CASM gallery hours, Wednesday to Sunday from 10am until 4pm.
CASM is located at 63 Ormsby Terrace, Mandurah. Exhibition details are available at artspacesmandurah.com.au
