The City of Mandurah has put $500,000 up for grabs for talented artists to create a public artwork to complement the new bridge currently under construction.
The City is currently working with arts consultants Maker + Co and Artsource to find multi-skilled artists to create works that share local stories, heritage and the community’s vision for a welcoming and multicultural city.
Mayor Marina Vergone said the City’s approach to the artwork exemplified the vision of Mandurah as a connected and forward-thinking city that honoured its past, celebrated the present and embraced its future.
“We know that this is such an important crossing that not only connects our city geographically but also our community spirit,” she said.
“This is such a rare and exciting opportunity for an artist to create a piece to enhance one of the biggest infrastructure projects that our city has ever seen.
“We hope to push the boundaries of public art by using new and interactive technologies that will create evolving points of interest and become synonymous with Mandurah.”
In May this year, artists, community members and City representatives came together for a brainstorming day to identify the elements that should be included in the artwork.
The ideas generated from the event have been included in the briefing process for artists responding to the City’s expression of interest to create the artwork.
“Collaborative approaches to the creation of the artwork between traditional and non-traditional public artists, the community, innovators, and those working with emerging technologies are welcomed,” the City of Mandurah said.
