Excitement is mounting at the Mandurah Magic after their game one win over Lakeside on Saturday night, with the team now just one strong performance away from punching their ticket to the grand final.
The Magic were prolific in overcoming Lakeside in game one of the semi finals, with the State Basketball League’s ultimate game now within an arm’s reach.
But coach Randy Miegel stressed the importance of staying focused ahead of a massive game two on the road against the Lightning.
“We can’t get caught up in the hype when we’ve still got to beat a great team in Lakeside,” he said.
“Obviously we want to acknowledge that there is a real prize up for grabs for us in this game, but if we get ahead of ourselves they’ll punish us.
“It’s hard to keep a lid on it, it’s a really exciting time for the club and our players, but there’s still a job to be done.”
Lakeside dished up an enormous challenge to Mandurah in game one, particularly after surrendering the lead in the first quarter.
Their quick brand of basketball and desire to shoot a high number of threes led to Mandurah having to overcome a number of runs from the Lightning.
It wasn’t until later in the game that the Magic was able to take control and run out 10-point victors.
“It was a battle. The swings to and fro for both teams made it pretty intense,” Miegel said.
“I was really pleased with how our girls responded to each challenge – all of our players did their part even if it was only for a couple of minutes.
“We had some standout performances, but overall it takes a team effort to beat a team like Lakeside.”
Now, the Magic need just four solid quarters to return them to the grand final.
But coach Miegel said the side wouldn’t sway from its regular preparation ahead of game two against the Lightning.
“It’s a Friday night game so we won’t over-train the girls by any means,” he said.
“We’ll have a few sessions, probably a more relaxed one on Thursday, and then go into Friday night with our minds focused on getting a win.”
A win would see Mandurah return to the Women’s SBL promise-land for the first time since 2009.
