Mandurah community members had a ball on Friday night to celebrate this year’s NAIDOC Week.
For the first time in Mandurah’s history, residents dusted off their dancing shoes and ball gowns to celebrate the region’s rich Aboriginal history with a formal ball at the Bendigo Bank Stadium’s Plantinum Room.
The 18+ event kicked off at 6pm, and included an Aboriginal-inspired three course meal, live music and plenty of entertainment.
At the event, masters of ceremonies Frank Nannup and George Walley spoke about the need to celebrate Aboriginal history and the strong link between indigenous languages and culture.
Guest speakers also recounted the history of NAIDOC Week and emphasised the importance of this year’s topic ‘Our Languages Matter’.
However, the highlight of the night was the traditional Aboriginal dances by the Mandjar Maamun Nyumbi Theatre dancers, who brought culture to life as they performed in front of attendees.
