Police rushed to Bulolo Street, Ashmont, shortly after 1pm to discover a 36-year-old man – believed to be drug-affected – running through the neighbourhood and creating a disturbance.
After being spoken to by officers, the man allegedly barricaded himself inside a property with two young girls, aged 9 and 10.
He proceeded to brandish several knives, threatening violence against police as he trapped the kids inside.
Specialist police and highway patrol surrounded the property and tried to negotiate with the hysterical man for almost an hour before smashing the front window and storming the home.
After a tussle he was apprehended and arrested.
Inspector Peter McLay said the two girls were extremely shaken by the traumatic incident.
“It’s a very serious incident which thankfully has been resolved without any injuries to the parties involved,” he said.
“It’s an extremely nasty incident and the girls are obviously very distressed.”
“At various stages he has armed himself with different implements including knives.”
It is believed the man will receive a medical evaluation before he is formally charged.
