Perth anglers are being encouraged to try their luck at the new artificial reef towers that have just been sunk off the city's coast.
The fish towers have been specially designed as artificial reefs that will attract both pelagic and demersal fish species, creating new fishing opportunities for anglers.
And the fish are biting right now, with reports of good catches of salmon, dhufish and snapper flooding in from fishing spots across the metro area.
The new reef towers will give anglers a new offshore spot to try their luck at, joining artificial reefs off the coasts of Dunsborough, Bunbury and Mandurah to create a string of marine hot spots from Perth to the South West.
Funded through recreational fishing licence fees, and designed by WA-based artificial reef specialists Subcon, the steel towers are 12.5m high and weigh fifty tonnes.
They have been sunk in "the paddock" between Garden Island and Rottnest Island.
Recfishwest said their coordinates were: 32??? 07.527??? S, 115??? 27.013??? E for Tower 1 and 32??? 07.461??? S, 115??? 26.978??? E for Tower 2 in 44-45m water depth.
"The reef towers were specifically designed to not only house demersal fish species but namely to attract an array of pelagic top-water fish in a similar way to FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices)," a Recfishwest spokesperson said.
"The lattice-like steel upper part of the reef will provide structure and concentrate small bait fish, attracting predatory pelagics. The purpose built design will also allow demersal species to shelter amongst the large base structure with its various shapes, crevasses and vertical profile."
Species like samson, yellowtail kingfish, spanish mackerel and tuna are all be expected at the reef as well as demersals such as pink snapper, dhufish and baldchin groper.
Recfishwest recommends fishers avoid anchoring right on top of the structures, instead it's best to troll around the towers or try your luck drifting weighted mulies in a burley trail.
