After taking out the Pro-Am of the Year award in 2016, the Peel region’s biggest golf tournament has been increased to a three-day spectacle for this year’s installment.
The Steelscene Peel Pro-Am will showcase some of Australia’s best golfing talent on the local fairways, with The Cut Golf Course, Mandurah Country Club and Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club to host the event this May.
“It’s really exciting we can stretch it out to three days,” The Cut golf manager Todd Bergersen said.
“After the success of last year’s event it’s great to be able to add an extra day and show off another one of the Peel region’s local golf courses.”
Newly added to the event, Meadow Springs will host the second day of the pro-am with Mandurah Country Club to open the event on Wednesday, May 24.
The final will be held at The Cut on the Friday.
The total prize purse of $33,000 is set to attract some of the country’s top professional golfers, along with a pool of talented amateurs.
Mandurah Country Club professional Hayley Bettencourt said the tournament offered a unique challenge to golfers, who would swing their way through a trio of divergent courses.
“Meadow Springs, Mandurah and The Cut are all really different in the way they are planned out so it becomes quite challenging for the golfers,” she said.
“They’re only 10 minutes down the road from each other but golfers still need to really adapt to the differences.”
Bettencourt is hoping to follow the footsteps of Katelyn Must, who won the 2016 tournament.
“It was really good to have a female winner last year so hopefully we can keep that form going and make a bit of a tradition of it,” she said.
“It’d be nice to be up there at the finish but it’s also just nice to be able to compete in an event like this that’s right on your doorstep.”
The event also gives amateur golfers an opportunity to play in team events with certified PGA professionals.
Bergersen said the clubs are hoping to build on the success of the 2016 Peel Pro-Am.
“We were able to trial some things in the first one and obviously it went really well winning the Pro-Am of the Year,” he said.
“We’re hoping it’s an even bigger hitter this time around now it’s a three-day event.
“The City of Mandurah and MAPTO have really got behind it and we’re looking forward to it.”
Entries for the 2017 Steelscene Peel Pro-Am will open soon.
