The travel plans of a 21-year-old Mandurah woman have been thrown into chaos, with the backpacker stranded at a hostel in Thailand thanks to extreme flooding.
Tamara Mott left two weeks ago for a six-week trip of a lifetime, backpacking through Southeast Asia.
Currently on the Thai island of Koh Samui, the local resident has shared videos and photos of the flood waters which saw her stranded in a restaurant for four hours, and unable to leave to island.
“Last night myself and two friends were stuck in a restaurant due to flash flooding,” she said.
“We were there for four hours with no power, water rushing down like rapids and debris flying down.”
Ms Mott said once it got dark, she and her friends attempted to return to their hostel on higher ground.
“Walking back was like nothing I could imagine,” she said.
“The water was rushing up to our waist.”
Ms Mott said the hostel had since run out of food, power and water, and guests were in “survival mode”, walking through flood waters to get supplies.
She is hoping to leave the island by Sunday, but with ferry cancellations due to the wild weather, she may be stuck there for a while longer.
Despite the floods, Ms Mott said she was happy and not in danger.
“”My parents know I am safe,” she said.
“We are all in good spirits as we are safe here.
“We just have to wait it out.
“The hostel is still serving beer, so that’s something to be happy about.”
