Four Murdoch University postgraduate students are hoping to inject a little bit of tension into the local surrounds, with plans to film a horror-themed short film in Mandurah.
They Are Waiting follows the story of a typical, yet socially awkward, teenager, Hayley, and her more adventurous friend Jasmine as they set out for a night of drunken antics.
In an effort to no be late for the party, the pair make the fateful decision to take a shortcut through the woods.
But there are others in the woods. And they are waiting.
The student crew involved believe the film – which is currently in the funding phase – will be an experience, as films which twist the lines of thrillers and horrors are often unique.
“The short film is steeped in tension, with a distinct atmosphere and style pervading throughout,” producer Amy Hammond said.
“We look at the consequences of people’s actions when pushed too far, and how deeply they can impact.
“Peer pressure, bullying, friendship, self determination, and fear, are all elements which play a part in the characters respective journeys.
“These have all certainly played a part in our own journeys in life, and no doubt many of you.”
Ms Hammond said the project was developed extensively over the course of a year, with many postgraduate students taking part.
“[We worked] alongside some of Western Australia’s, and Australia’s, top film professionals, whose credits include Lord of the Rings, Wolverine, McLeod’s Daughter’s and James Cameron’s Deep Sea Challenge, as part of our postgraduate studies at Murdoch University,” she said.
Now, the team are looking for support for their endeavour, with a crowdfunding campaign up and running to support the film.
“While we can access a number of resources through our course of study, there are things we have to finance in order to make our film happen,” Ms Hammond said.
“To do this we’re looking for the support and generosity of the local community through donations to our campaign to make the film a reality.”
