The Old Bridge replacement works are moving one step closer towards completion, with on-land and boardwalk piling works finished in early September and the first bridge segments ready to be put into place.

Main Roads said the works are going well, with the bridge launching bay on its final stages of preparation on the western foreshore to enable bridge construction.
“Pilling works are on schedule, concrete works on the western foreshore and Pier 1 columns is complete, formwork for concrete at Pier 2 and 3 in the estuary is progressing and the bridge segment launch program is being finalised,” a Main Roads spokesperson said.
“In total, there are five piers for the new bridge starting on the western foreshore at Pier 1 working across the estuary to Pier 5.
“The piers will be the raised column structures in the estuary, supported by the piles.
“The bridge launching bay is being prepared on the western foreshore to enable bridge construction in thirteen segments.”
Over the next few months, one bridge segment at a time would be pushed across the estuary from the western foreshore to the eastern foreshore and put into place.
“Each bridge segment will be moved into place using hydraulic jacks located on the western foreshore, coming to rest on the five piers,” the spokesperson said.
