Operation Roam – a joint initiative of NSW Police Force and Crime Stoppers Australia – was launched last Monday, to help track down wanted people via the exchange of information between policing jurisdictions across Australia.
Police have used social media to seek information from the community about a number of alleged offenders who may have left their state or territory and are now residing interstate.
As part of the operation, the details of a 41-year-old wanted man were circulated by virtue of an arrest warrant.
Following information received during the campaign, the man was arrested about 11.30am on Monday at a property in Pinjarra.
The man faced court on Tuesday where his extradition was granted to NSW.
He arrived at Sydney Airport with NSW Detectives about 8.30pm this Wednesday evening.
He was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged and refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Thursday morning.
The man is the fifth target – the first for NSW – to be arrested as part of the national Operation Roam campaign.
Crime Stoppers compiled a list of wanted offenders – 14 of whom remain outstanding – and they urged members of the public to come forward with information on their whereabouts.
Operational Communications and Information Commander, Assistant Commissioner Peter Barrie said the arrest in Pinjarra represented the national joint effort between Crime Stoppers, police and the wider community.
“This arrest and the operation as a whole, demonstrates how we are all working together – with the support of the wider community – to achieve a common goal of capturing wanted people across the country,” he said.
“Crime Stoppers has shown that even the most seemingly insignificant piece of information can prove pivotal to solving a crime or locating a wanted person.
“Social media has also shown to be a very powerful communication tool. Within seconds we can share pictures and information with hundreds of thousands of people in the community, which they can then share, so the potential reach is exponential.
“We urge anyone in the community to contact Crime Stoppers if you know anything about the offenders nominated as part of Operation Roam. It takes mere minutes and could be the key to making NSW a much safer place.”
