Recycling enthusiasts can now fill their pockets with a "cash for cans" scheme introduced in WA to help stop littering and improve recycling.
The Liberal government announced on Wednesday it was planning to introduce the program, where people will receive 10 cents for returning beer and spirit bottles, soft drink cans and various non-alcoholic bottles as well as small, flavoured milk cartons.
Recyclers can collect their 10 cents after disposing of cans and bottles at reverse vending machines and collection depots at parks, beaches and other public spaces across WA.
The plan will come into effect around mid-2018 and Premier Colin Barnett said there was a "strong community desire" for a container deposit scheme.
"Drinks containers are commonly littered, which is not only unsightly, but can cause environmental harm," he said.
"With a 10 cent refund available, there is a greater incentive to recycle as everyone can benefit from doing the right thing."
Environment Minister Albert Jacob said the big winners from the scheme would be charities, sporting and community groups.
"It's a win for the environment, jobs, the community and the recycling industry," Mr Jacob said.
"I have been persuaded by the success of schemes in other states and territories. South Australia records higher recycling rates than any other state and significantly less beverage container litter and WA has the highest percentage of drinks containers in our litter.
"I believe this scheme will make a big difference in this state."
NSW recently introduced a cash-for-can scheme, which came into effect last month.
South Australia introduced a container deposit scheme in 1977 and the Northern Territory in 2011. Queensland is expected to follow WA and NSW's lead in 2018.
Naturally WA Labor "lost their bottle" over the new scheme, after the Liberal party rejected their bid to introduce a container deposit scheme bill in 2011.
"It's a pity this was not done years ago," Labor leader Mark McGowan said.
"Labor has long wanted to introduce a container deposit scheme in Western Australia but we were frustrated by the Liberals and Nationals who opposed the move.
"This is something I and the Labor Party have long pushed for and it is good to see Mr Barnett finally come to his senses."
