City officers identified the need to upgrade the local road network around the Forum to accommodate the growth in traffic once the shopping centre upgrade works are finished.
The Forum redevelopment project was approved by the Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) with the pre-condition the developer reached a funding agreement with the City of Mandurah and Main Roads WA to upgrade the roads where needed.
The City agreed to fund the intersection upgrade of Pinjarra Road with Dower Street and Coolibah Avenue as well as contributing to the future upgrade of Pinjarra Road.
However, for the works to be completed the City will have to acquire land on both sides of Pinjarra Road to be able to widen the road.
During the council meeting on Tuesday, councilors expressed their concerns about the acquisition of land as a delay factor for the works.
The upgrade of the Pinjarra Road and Dower Street intersection was scheduled to be completed with last year’s Roads to Recovery funding, but due to the delay in acquiring the land and the proximity to the time limit for the funding, the City was forced to allocate the funds to other projects.
City of Mandurah chief Mark Newman said ideally the works would be undertaken during the shopping centre redevelopment, but an unwilling acquisition of the land would delay the process.
