Local tech hub The Makers will run a youth leadership camp and follow-up program again this year.
From July 4-8, the first week of the school holidays, participants aged 12-18 will engage in team-building adventure activities and personal challenges in a surprise location.
The Makers chief Rhys Williams is inviting Mandurah’s young upcoming leaders to participate in the program, which is designed to develop life skills and provide opportunities to contribute to the local community.
“The young people that come through the program are constantly pushing their comfort zones, doing great things in the community and growing up to be great people,” Mr Williams said.
Mr Williams said he put the program together as a way of helping young people in the region realise their leadership potential.
“We aren’t necessarily looking for the young people with the best grades or who have been accepted into prestigious programs. We’re looking for the natural born leader, someone with that raw ability to influence their friends and lead a group. A lot of the time, those leaders don’t even recognise the ability they have,” he said.
After the camp, a twelve month follow-up program has participants meet fortnightly to catch up, discuss the issues faced in our community and come up with solutions to those problems.
Mr Williams said engaging young people in meaningful dialogue about challenges and roles in the community is a key ingredient to building the next generation of leaders.
“We’re super lucky to have the support of the City of Mandurah, Regional Development Australia Peel and the Halls Head Community Bank behind this initiative, so we’ve been able to keep the expenses right down for people,” he said.
“We’re hoping to get a good crew along this year, and hopefully have a decent impact in the community over the next 12 months.”
