Senator Dodson, a prominent figure in the Aboriginal reconciliation movement, was appointed to the Senate in April after the resignation of Western Australian Labor Senator Joe Bullock.
He visited Fairbridge to campaign for Mr Winmar and meet with Fairbridge chief David Russell.
Mr Winmar works at the non-profit managing the Fairbridge Bindjareb Project, which trains Aboriginal people in prison for jobs in the mining industry.
Mr Dodson said the Fairbridge Bindjareb Project was a “positive program producing good results”.
“I want every child to have the same chance of succeeding at school, no matter what their background, no matter where they live,” Mr Winmar said.
On Wednesday, Perth MP Alannah MacTiernan launched Mr Winmar’s campaign.
“Barry is a fantastic candidate with a great back story: wore the uniform as a front line police officer for 15 years and has had a great career in mining and with not-for-profits,” she wrote on social media.
“Barry will be a first-class candidate.”
