The playground is located very close to the railway tracks and to date has no fence that separates the area from the Brookfield Rail.
The community in North Dandalup had expressed their safety concerns during several community workshops since August last year and feedback received from a community survey also expressed the urgency of the matter.
The Shire of Murray has received a $15,100 grant from MZI Resources to install a 1.2m high fence to protect children and other users from the trains circulating on the nearby tracks.
“There are a number of activities within the play space including play equipment, half-court basketball and a BMX track, all in close proximity to the railway line,” Shire of Murray President Cr. Maree Reid.
“Trains travel at speed through the town site and the purpose of the fence is to isolate the facilities from the adjacent rail network, improving user safety and encourage increased usage.”
The works to install the fence will finish in late June 2016.
The improvement of the play space in Railway Avenue is part of the Shire’s Local Community Plan.
The Local Community Plan will also involve the repair of the fencing around the tennis courts near North Dandalup Fire Brigade, the investment by the State Government of $49.3 million towards the Nambeelup Industrial Estate, and the establishment of a North Dandalup heavy haulage bypass during the Tonkin highway extension.
