Bree Klasztorny, who took out the person under 25 award for the work she does with the Mandurah Basketball Association, said it was a great way to recognise people who are giving back to the community.
“I was privileged enough to play basketball so coaching at the MBA was a way to pay it forward,” Ms Klasztorny said.
“To be able to give back is just the best thing.
“I would have done it anyway, without knowing about the award, but it was nice to be recognised.”
The awards foster, recognise and celebrate significant contributions to community life and active citizenship in all local government areas of Western Australia. Nominations are now open, and the winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Mandurah’s Eastern Foreshore on January 26.
City deputy mayor Darren Lee said it was fairly common to have fewer nominees for the under 25 award category, and he would like to see as many nominations as possible this year.
“Young people get involved but many just see it as part of their learning,” he said.
“While this may be the case, it’s important we recognise them.
“There are many people and organisations in Mandurah which make significant contributions towards enhancing our community life.
“I’d encourage everyone to have a think about the special people and role models out there who go above and beyond the call of duty, and nominate them for these annual awards.”
The award categories are: Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award, Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a person under 25 years, and Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a community group.
The winners will be presented with a medallion and certificate in recognition of their community pride and spirit, as well as a commemorative bronze plaque on the Honour Walk in Mandjar Square.
