Coates, who trains at Ed’s Shed Boxing Gym in Lake Clifton, dominated his 63 kilogram junior bout against Cuban Boxing Club’s Kane Jeakings.
Jeakings had 10 fights extra experience and was carrying an extra two kilograms in weight when he stepped into the ring at the Croatian Club on Sunday afternoon.
But Coates dominated the bout from start to finish with great hand speed and strong footwork.
Coach Ed Kuznicki praised his young charge’s work rate and effort.
“He has put in extra time and has worked really hard on his body positioning,” coach Kuznicki said.
“I’m super proud of his efforts.”
Coates was one of three from Ed’s Shed to prevail in their bouts. Chas Robinson fought off a bout of the flu to take a unanimous points decision in the 60kg youth division.
Fighting against Onyx Fit Gym’s Jackson England, Robinson did enough to outpoint his opponent.
Brother Chester Robinson also took home the chocolates in the 54kg junior division with a strong performance against John Miocevich from Kore Boxing Club, with a performance that paid attention to work rate and the basics.
