KARISE Eden attracted the attention of Australia in the 2012 season of The Voice.
She captivated the attention of audiences with not only her harmonic and soulful voice, but also inspirational story.
Only 19 years old at the time, Eden told The Voice and Australia how she spent time in several women’s refuge homes from her early teenaged years and then eventually lived with foster parents.
It was the tale of the underdog, with Eden eventually taking out the show with the aid of mentor and judge Seal.
But after a short-lived time in the spotlight, the young singer cancelled her Australian tour to support her first album and stepped out of the spotlight.
Eden confirmed in an episode of the ABC’s Australian Story late last year that she had suffered a complete physical and emotional breakdown, admitting that enough was enough and she had “hit rock bottom”.
Following the interview was the release of Things I’ve Done, an album which she will be performing in Mandurah next month.
“It’s basically what it says; it’s about things I’ve done,” she said.
“It’s self-constructive and lyrically introverted.
“It’s all part of the process really.
“It talks about some of the things I’ve been through and things we’ve all gone through at one point – feeling alone and rejected.
“Back [before The Voice] I was a lot younger and in a different position in life.
“I had no ambitions to do anything with my music and now my world revolves around it.
“And I’ve got to write an album about that.”
After The Voice it was a whole new ball game for Eden, who needed to learn how to cope in the industry.
One of the things she needed to get used to in order to be a singer/songwriter was how to write a song in the “real world”.
“I didn’t think I could keep up at times,” she said.
“I’d be put in a room with a songwriter and be told that at 6pm we’d have to walk out with a song – and it might already be 12 o’clock.
“It was quite a battle to get used to.
“We were definitely under pressure but at the end of the day, whether the song was half or fully finished, you’d take home a new baby.
“I still listen to half finished songs today because I love them and just haven’t got around to meeting up with the co-writer yet.”
Eden will be at the Ravenswood Hotel on June 12.
