THE Peel region will be well represented by a host of boxers at this year’s Australian Championships on the Gold Coast.
Eureka Gym fighter Alex Winwood will compete in the 52 kilogram; Ed’s Shed fighter Chas Robinson in the 56kg; Mandurah Boxing Club’s Daniel Heyes in the 64kg and Rasmussen Boxing’s Isaac Fischer-Rasmussen in the 91kg and Naomi-Lee Fischer-Rasmussen in the 69kg will all represent Western Australia.
Eureka Gym coach Brian Sartori will be going over to help the local boxers. Sartori was confident some of the boxers had the ability to go all the way.
“Danny has been there a lot of times and has a lot of experience,” he said. “Chas is just a tough kid; all have got a good chance. It’s good for the area.
“If Alex wins he could win for the 2015 Samoa Youth Games and he has been invited to Canberra to go to the Institute of Sport in June.”
Naomi-Lee Fischer-Rasmussen is a good chance at winning the title after making a successful return to boxing following a break after the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The former Olympian and world number one will be competing for her fifth Australian Title.
Her brother Isaac will be competing for his first national title in 91-plus kilogram division at 132kg.
Robinson’s coach Eddie Kuznicki was wrapped with the fighters selection and said the tournament was a step up.
“The level of skill and intensity goes up at the national selection,” he said. “Chas fought New South Wales’ Sam Goodman and had a narrow loss and is ready.”
The state championships begin on April 27 and go to May 2.
