IT’S been a big year for country singer Jasmine Atkins and 2015 is looking to be even bigger.
The young singer, who won this year’s Coast Live Idol as well as performing at major events such as Crab Fest, has spent the last week in the studio working on her upcoming single, Everywhere I Go.
“It’s an upbeat fun, country rock slash pop kind of song,” Atkins said.
“It’s a love song; kind of like you know someone is bad for you but you stay with them anyway.
“It was the first time in a proper Perth studio; it was a little stressful but fun.
“But we’ll see how we go – we might bring out another single and then an album or we might just go straight to releasing an album.
“I’m about to start my third year at Western Australian Arts Performing Arts (WAAPA) so it gets pretty busy when I’m at uni so we’ll see how I go.”
The single is not the only thing on the cards for Atkins, with the singer accepted into the Academy of Country Music in Tamworth.
The intensive course runs for two weeks and gives those accepted a chance to learn everything from songwriting and performance skills to how to handle the music business.
Held during the Tamworth County Music Festival, it also gives Atkins a chance to get involved with heart of the music genre in Australia.
“I play keyboard with [local country singer] Jonny Taylor and he invited me to Tamworth for the festival but we had a very full-on schedule,” she said.
“This time I get to do more of the touristy things.”
Atkins was also meant to feature on the Australian Made Summer of Music Festival bill, as the only local act.
The local singer only found out moments before the general public when the event was cancelled on Tuesday.
“I am quite disappointed,” Atkins said.
“It was going to be a cool gig to play.
“A good thing to come out of it though is that I get to stay an extra couple of days in Tamworth and see the Gold Guitar awards.
“Good things can come out of bad things.”
