More than 1200 people witnessed Dwellingup come from behind to record a 12-point win in the competition’s closest grand final in 14 years.
Dwellingup finished the home and away season on top of the ladder but had failed to defeat Safety Bay in both of their two meetings.
However that changed when Dwellingup broke through to defeat Safety Bay in their semi-final clash two weeks ago to book an automatic place in the grand final; on that occasion they ran out 78-point winners.
From the first bounce in the grand final it was clear it wasn’t going to be a blow out.
Safety Bay led by two points at quarter time after Dwellingup failed to capitalise on their opportunities with two goals, five behinds.
At half time Safety Bay had extended their lead to nine points, the arm wrestle continued in the third quarter with Dwellingup able to close the deficit to three points.
Aided by a slight breeze in the final quarter, Dwellingup were able to kick the first four goals to lead by 24 points with 10 minutes remaining.
Safety Bay didn’t lay down, kicking the next three goals to trail by one goal with four minutes remaining.
Safety Bay were able to get the ball into their forward line but squandered their chance turning the ball over with Dwellingup able to take the ball up the other end to kick the sealer to win by 12 points, 15.11 (101) to 14.5 (89).
Chris McCarthy, Jayden Forrestall and S McMeekin were best on ground for Dwellingup with Cody Lynch-Taylor and Zac Smith among the best for Safety Bay.
